I had dreamed of making Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies ever since I ran across a Banana Drop Cookies recipe a long time ago from one of my blogging friends. I remember thinking as soon as I saw them, "Ohhhhh, those would be so good as a chocolate chip cookie!"
And alas, they went on my long mental list of things I wanted to make.
I've finally gotten around to playing with this concept, and figuring out a recipe that meets the expectations I'd imagined in my head. But I have to admit, it took several tries to arrive at what I had envisioned. But once I did? ... The end result even surpassed what I had imagined!
As I tried several banana cookie recipes, I found that most turn out quite cakey ... more like eating a smaller version of banana bread or a dense muffin than eating a chewy cookie. And the first two versions of these Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies that I came up with myself and made were no different too cakey for my taste ... and they didn't seem to taste enough like a true chocolate chip cookie to me, either.
I wanted a chewier cookie.
And I wanted it to taste more chocolate chip cookie-ish.
So I turned to the most iconic chocolate chip cookie recipe in the world for inspiration ... the good old Toll House chocolate chip cookie.
What I noticed in the Toll House recipe that wasn't in most banana cookie recipes I've seen ... and the original two I created ... was brown sugar. And a pretty hefty dose of brown sugar, at that.
The taste of the banana is definitely prominent, but not overpoweringly banana. To me, it's a really nice balance between a chocolate chip cookie taste and a banana taste ... with a just a hint of cinnamon to compliment the banana.
And judging by how quickly these were gobbled up, it's a texture my family is definitely happy with, too.

Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies

ingredients:
- 1 c. unsalted butter, softened
- 3/4 c. granulated sugar
- 1/2 c. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 c. well-mashed ripe banana {about 2 medium-sized bananas}
- 2 ¼ c. all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/4 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 c. (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
instructions:
How to cook Banana Chocolate Chip Cookies
- Mix together flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, and cinnamon; set aside.
- Cream together butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla until light and fluffy; about 2 to 3 minutes. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in mashed banana.
- Gradually add flour mixture and mix until just incorporated. Stir in chocolate chips by hand.
- Chill dough for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Drop approximately one tablespoon of dough 2 inches apart onto baking sheets. Bake at 375℉ for 9-10 minutes until the edges look set. Cool on baking sheet for 2 minutes then carefully remove to cooling racks to cool completely.
