These fun little chocolate-dipped sugar wafers are fabulous in so many ways.  They're:
  • Easy - Can you melt chocolate & sprinkle sprinkles?  Then you've got this.
  • Last minute - They take basically no time to prepare, and basically no time to set.
  • Festive - What's more festive than a fun mix of red, white, and blue sprinkles?
These fun little chocolate-dipped sugar wafers are fabulous in so many ways.
  • Adorable - A cute little size.  And again ... sprinkles.
  • Kid-friendly - Kids love them!  And if you're so inclined, kids can make them, too.  Our 9-year-old daughter whipped up about 20 of them in no-time flat.
  • Crowd pleasing - Adored by both the kids and grown-ups, alike.  A platter of these babies disappears lickety-split.

My husband came up with the idea to make these Red White & Blue Chocolate-Dipped Sugar Wafers.

We were walking through the cookie aisle at the grocery store when he spotted a package sugar wafers.  He looked at me and said, "Hey, could you dip those in chocolate?  They'd be fun with sprinkles for the 4th of July."  (I love that he's always thinking about recipe ideas for the blog.)

So into the grocery cart went a package of sugar wafers so we could try out his idea.  And what a fabulous idea it is!  A fabulously easy idea, at that.

We decided to try out both white chocolate and milk chocolate for dipping to see which tasted and looked best for these fun little treats.

From a taste perspective, they both work great - tasting equally delicious.  From a look perspective, I like the look of the milk chocolate better - and my husband likes the look of the white chocolate better.

From a look perspective, I like the look of the milk chocolate better - and my husband likes the look of the white chocolate better.

So, choose milk chocolate or white chocolate based on your personal preference - either one works.

Or do a combination of both like we did for the batch in these photos.  The mix looks really pretty together.

To make a batch of these easy little Red White & Blue Chocolate-Dipped Sugar Wafers, start by melting the chocolate.

Use a package of white candy melts or white bark coating for the white chocolate version, or use a package of milk chocolate candy melts or chocolate bark coating for the milk chocolate version.  Melt your choice together with a tiny bit of shortening in the microwave per the package directions (typically in 30 second intervals, stirring in between each time).

Choose a small deep bowl or a tall narrow microwave-safe container to melt the chocolate in.  These container shapes make it easier to get good chocolate coverage when dipping the sugar wafers in.

Dip 3/4 of each sugar wafer cookie in the candy coating, and let the excess coating drip off back into the container.

As you dip more and more sugar wafers and the amount of melted chocolate in the container gets less and less, tip the container slightly as you dip to help get better coverage up the sugar wafer.

Immediately sprinkle each sugar wafer with sprinkles while the chocolate coating is still wet.

I find it easiest to sprinkle the sprinkles over a plate with a little lip on the edge or well in the center.  That way, sprinkles aren't bouncing off all over your house - the plate catches at least most of the spillover.

You can use any assortment of red, white, & blue sprinkles you'd like.  I'm especially fond of the combination of white non-pareilsblue jimmies, and red confetti sprinkles.

Place the dipped-and-sprinkled sugar wafers on a baking sheet lined with wax paper or aluminum foil and let them stand to allow the chocolate coating to set up.  The chocolate will set in matter of minutes.

That's all there is to it!

Now, we were curious about a couple of things "stylistically" when we made these.

First, we wondered would the sugar wafers look better dipped on the "short side" or on the "long side" harmonica-style?

So we tried both.

You can see the "long side" harmonica-style result in the photo below.  We definitely liked the "dipped on the short side" look much better.  Plus, that way left a better "handle" to hold onto both when dipping and when eating the chocolate-dipped sugar wafers.

Second, we wondered would a double-decker chocolate-dipped sugar wafer be better?  Would it be a more satisfyingly substantial treat to bite into?  Would two sugar wafers hold together simply from just being dipped together in chocolate?

Well, the double-decker chocolate-dipped sugar wafer (shown in the photo below) did indeed hold together quite nicely just from being dipped in the chocolate.

They're an easy, festive, adorable, kid-friendly, crowd-pleasing treat.  Not to mention, they can absolutely be made at the last minute if need be.

However, we actually didn't like the end result as well as just a plain, regular, single chocolate-dipped sugar wafer.  The double-deckers were more clumsy and quite crumbly to bite into, and just generally weren't as adorable as the singles.

We recommend you stick with dipping these in singles.
