Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings
Their warm crescent roll crust and tender apple filling, with cinnamon-sugar goodness baked on top, may just make Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings the perfect fall comfort food dessert. Quick, easy, and oh-so-good!
I must admit, the first time I heard about this Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings recipe from my mother-in-law, I didn't think it would work. Nor did I think it would be any good.
Basically, you wrap some crescent roll dough around apple chunks, season it with cinnamon-sugar, pour in a whole bunch of sugar water, and bake it.
Sounds easy enough. And pretty much anything made with crescent rolls is delicious.
But, pour in sugar water over the little apple-crescent bundles and bake it up? -- How on Earth was that going to work? I was skeptical, for sure.
The dumplings are soft on the bottom from baking within the sugary water, and wonderful cinnamon-puffiness on the top.
I envisioned a huge watery, sugary, soggy mess.
Much to my pleasant surprise, however, the recipe works! It works to deliver up puffy, tender little apple-filled dumplings encrusted in fabulously tasty cinnamon-sugar. The dumplings are soft on the bottom from baking within the sugary water, and wonderful cinnamon-puffiness on the top.
I'm not exactly how the recipe works to deliver up such apple-cinnamon delicious - but it does. And my skepticism over this recipe has been laid to rest.
And ohhhh, it's delicious.
Thanks to my mother-in-law's introduction, these little apple dumplings, along with their Crescent Roll Peach Dumplings cousins, are now one my go-to quick and easy desserts.
So let's take a look step-by-step how to whip up a pan full of these tasty little Crescent-wrapped apple dumplings. - It truly is really easy.
Start by peeling and coring some apples - pretty much any good baking apple will work. Then cut the apples into quarters so you have pretty good-sized apple chunks.
Place each apple piece on the wide end of a crescent roll dough triangle:
And then roll the dough up around the apple chunk to create a little apple-filled crescent bundle:
Place the apple dumpling bundles in a baking dish.
Combine some water and sugar in a saucepan and bring it to a boil to dissolve the sugar. Then pour the sugar-water directly over the apple dumplings in the baking dish, drenching each one with the sugar-water.
Some similar apple dumpling recipes call for Sprite or Mountain Dew soda instead of sugar water. If you'd rather use soda, that would be fine. I've never made these with Mountain Dew, but I have made them with Sprite and it works well. The results are pretty much the same.
I like the sugar-water option, because we rarely have soda on hand at the house. And then I don't need to buy some!
In the same way as the sugar-water, pour some melted butter over the dumplings, drizzling each one with some of the butter, too.
Then mix together some ground cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl until it's well combined.
Generously sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar evenly over the apple dumplings, using up all the cinnamon mixture. It'll be a good bit sprinkled on, but it'll all go on there just fine.
Finally, bake the dumplings up for about 30 minutes until they're cooked through, puffy, and the apples are tender inside.
Then serve them up warm just as they are, or add a dollop of whipped cream or scoop of vanilla ice cream if you’d like. Both are super tasty with the warm dumplings.
Crescent Roll Apple Dumplings are great warm straight from the oven, or at room temperature. But we do like ours best nice and warm.
Warm crescent roll crust and tender apple filling, with cinnamon-sugar goodness baked on the top may just be the perfect fall comfort food dessert.
But don't worry about those leftovers if you don't think you can devour an entire pan -- these dumplings reheat very well. Just spoon a dumpling or two onto a plate, and pop them in the microwave for a few seconds.
And be ready to dive into apple dumpling deliciousness! Warm crescent roll crust and tender apple filling, with cinnamon-sugar goodness baked on the top may just be the perfect fall comfort food dessert.
