Know someone on the naughty list? Make them a batch of these No-Bake Lumps of Coal. Oreo Cocoa Krispie Treats coal is such a deliciously fun way to tell folks they'd better shape up!
I sure know a few people who should be on the naughty list! ... at least in jest, anyway. I'm sure we all have a few friends or family members who deserve to receive a little coal this Christmas, too.
And what more fun way is there to pass along a little Christmas coal-cheer than with a delicious little sweet treat like these no-bake Oreo Cocoa Krispie Treats lumps of coal? Because these little lumps not only do a pretty good job impersonating the real thing, they're quite tasty, too.
Package a few up in a treat bag, tie with a little bow, and you've got just the perfect little gift for those who may have been not-so-nice.
So I decided to test out:
1. Regular Rice Krispies vs. Cocoa Krispies for the cereal obviously thinking the brown of the Cocoa Krispies would be more coal-like and "show up" less in the finished lumps of coal
2. Regular Oreos vs. chocolate-stuffed Oreos thinking the white cream of regular Oreos may show up as little white flecks in the mixture
3. Different amounts of finely crushed Oreos
As suspected, regular Rice Krispies cereal stuck out like little gleaming-white sore thumbs in the finished, un-dyed coal lumps. Cocoa Krispies are definitely the way to go. While they do show up lighter brown than the crushed Oreos, the finished product still looks like a lump of coal ... simply with some highlights of different shades of brown throughout.
For the Oreos, I was actually surprised to see that using chocolate-stuffed Oreos made no difference in the color of the final product. When finely crushed, the white filling of regular Oreos simply gets mixed in with the chocolate crumbs and doesn't show at all.
When it came to taste, we much preferred the taste of the lumps of coal made with regular Oreos, as they tasted like ... well ... regular Oreos. The ones made with chocolate-stuffed Oreos were lacking that characteristic classic Oreo taste. That being said, either Oreo variety works just fine.
As for the amount of Oreo crumbs, I found that a higher ratio of crumbs to Cocoa Krispies worked best for both color and taste. And using more Oreo crumbs indeed does create a dark enough color that no black food dye is needed. If you'd like a darker black color, then by all means, add some ... but I'm quite happy with the color without it.
So grab your naughty list, whip up a batch of these no-bake Oreo Cocoa Krispie Treats Lumps of Coal, and {deliciously} let those folks who need it know they'd better shape up!
