 The fabulous flavors of pumpkin and spice are for more than just pie Pumpkin Spice Martini  {& My Wild Ride}

So imagine you're driving down the interstate, toodling along at about 70 miles per hour in the passing lane, when all of sudden your car won't accelerate.  At all.

You're dropping speed.  Rapidly.

What happens when you step on the gas pedal?  Nothing.  So you floor it.  And still nothing.

Oh, I don't have to imagine it.  'Cause yeh, it happened.  Yesterday.  To me.  And let me just tell ya ...
It.   Was.   NOT.   Fun.

I was driving my husband and myself to a training class we're taking, just zipping along ... when out of nowhere, my car had a spaz attack and decided not to work.  No acceleration at all.  Now as I'm sure you can imagine, being stuck in the fast lane in interstate traffic, driving a car that won't accelerate, is not a good feeling.  Not good at all.

I stayed pretty calm.  At first.

I was able to get over out of the passing lane, fortunately, with my husband saying "Just get her to the next exit, just get her to the next exit!"  Uh, yeh dude ... that would be the plan ... if there was  an exit coming any time soon.  But at this point, we were on a long stretch of road that didn't appear to have anything coming any time soon.

And then I saw it.  The sign that said the next exit was in two miles.  TWO MILES!?!?  That's an eternity  when you're coasting on residual speed.

Fortunately, a teeny tiny bit of acceleration kicked in ... just enough to keep the car going at about 45 miles per hour.  Still not cool.

We creeped along, just hoping and praying to make it the two miles to the exit.

And then there it was.  The beautiful sight we so wanted to see.  The exit!

But that's also the moment when my calmness ended.

Because just before the exit, you'll never guess what there was.

Oh yes ... just before that exit were three lanes merging in with the interstate.  That I would have to cross.  And even better ... a great wall of traffic was coming in those three lanes.

Including a huge tractor trailer truck.

Timed perfectly ... or imperfectly, should I say ... to meet me as I tried to cross.  Three lanes of traffic.  At 45 miles per hour.  With no ability to accelerate.

Ah, good times.

I was just about having a panic attack at this point, and understandably so in my opinion.

I'm honestly not quite sure how I made it over to the exit.  But I did.  I do remember seeing nothing but the grate of the huge tractor trailer in my rear view mirror at one point.  And screaming at my husband over and over that I wasn't going to make it across the traffic.

But somehow ... somehow ... I did.

And when we rolled to a stop on that exit ramp, I'd never been so happy to get out of a car in all my life.

Once we had calmed down from our wild ride, then came the question of ... NOW WHAT?  We were stuck out in the middle of nowhere, on an exit ramp, with a severely injured car.  And still had about 30 minutes more driving to go to get to our training class {which happens to be a training class too important to us to just blow off}.

Well, I'm actually pretty proud of the 'NOW WHAT?' answer we came up with.

See, we were able to figure out that we were actually just a few miles away from the airport.  And hubby thought he could successfully 'limp' the car those few miles ... it would  go up to about 45 miles per hour, after all.  And what's plentiful at airports?? Rental car agencies!  So we quickly used my mobile phone {oh yeh, I forgot to tell you that our GPS died from a broken plug just a few minutes before the car konked out} to map out a way to the airport ... without going on the interstate.  And then we were off.

I'm happy to say we made it to the airport successfully, ditched my car in a long-term parking lot, grabbed a rental, and successfully made it to our training class.

Just one hour late.

Not too bad given our morning adventure, I'd say.

{Now as to the fate of my car ... that's still to-be-determined.  She'll be going to the car hospital tomorrow for assessment.}

But after all that, I may just have come home yesterday and had a couple of these Pumpkin Spice Martinis.

Oh, who are we kidding?  I did  come home yesterday and have a couple of these Pumpkin Spice Martinis.

Can you blame me?

prep time: 5 Mcook time: total time: 5 M

ingredients:

For each martini:
  • 2 T. 100% pure pumpkin puree
  • 3/4 oz. simple syrup
  • 2 oz. vanilla vodka
  • 2 oz. Bailey's Irish Cream liquor
  • 1/8 tsp. pumpkin pie spice

instructions:

How to cook Pumpkin Spice Martini

  1. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Add pumpkin puree, simple syrup, vodka, Bailey's, and pumpkin pie spice; shake for about 30 seconds.
  3. Pour shaken mixture through a strainer into a martini or cocktail glass.
  4. Sprinkle with additional pumpkin pie spice and garnish with a cinnamon stick, if desired.
TRACEY'S NOTES
  1. To make simple syrup, place equal parts water and granulated sugar in a saucepan {I usually do 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup sugar}. Heat over medium heat, stirring, until sugar is completely dissolved. Cool.
  2. For sugar & spice rims on your glasses, combine a bit of granulated sugar and pumpkin pie spice in a shallow dish. Use your fingertip dipped in water to wet the rim of each glass, all the way around. Dip each rim into the sugar and spice mixture to coat. Set aside.
